Episode 33 – Let’s Talk Pie Crusts, Plastic Bags and Farming with Chatney Gelfius

Episode #33 Let’s Talk Pie Crusts, Plastic Bags and Farming with Chatney Gelfius

This is my most selfish episode. As a former Home Economics teacher, I would always skip Chapter 29 in the Foods textbook on Pies. Why? Because I, Linda Toupin, did not know how to make a good pie crust! So I asked Chatney to help me out. Not only does she make a delicious pie crust she shows us some really cool tricks and tools. Enjoy this great conversation about farm life and pie crusts.

Chatney’s Pie Crust Recipe

4 Pie Crusts

5 1/3 cups flour
2 tsp salt
2 cups Crisco
1 cup ice water

Combine flour and salt. Cut in Crisco with fork or pastry cutter until the dough is the shape of peas.
Gradually add water until dough comes together. Do not get too moist, just enough until it pulls from the side of the bowl you can shape it into a ball(s)
Bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes.
